The black tie benefit concluded the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s short visit to the US east coast, which included a meeting with the president and an NBA basketball game. For their final engagement the duchess donned a dark-green evening gown by UK designer Jenny Packham, accented by diamond and emerald drop earrings with her hair swept into a chignon. The duke wore a black tuxedo and bow-tie.
Dinner guests were serenaded by opera singer Renee Fleming, a triple-Grammy award-winning soprano, who sang Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and the Puccini aria O Mio Babbino Caro.
US comedian and chat show host Seth Meyers gave a toast, after Tom Hanks, whose daughter attended St Andrews, had to pull out at the last minute for personal reasons.
Other guests included the duke’s cousin, Princess Eugenie, who lives in New York, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and actress turned fashion designer Mary-Kate Olsen, accompanied by her partner Olivier Sarkozy, the half-brother of the former French president Nicolas Sarkozy.
